SCIENCE LABORATORY

The National Diploma Programme in Science Laboratory Technology is designed to produce technicians capable of assisting Laboratory technologists in various laboratory analysis and practical work. The programme aims at providing students with adequate information on scientific principles and theories and to help them develop practical skills for scientific investigation.

On completion of this programme, the diplomate should be able to:

  • Assist in chemical and biochemical analyses and quality control in: industry (oil, food, brewing, detergent, textiles, etc.), hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutions;
  • Assist in physics and electronic laboratories with physical analyses and the maintenance of instruments
  • Assist in biological and microbiological analyses and experiments in hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutes
  • Work as sales, marketing, administration and management representative in the industries
  • Set up his/her own business

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Entry requirements for the National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology programme include at least Five credit passes at not more than two sittings in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Technical Certificate (NTC), General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level, or the West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) in relevant subjects.

The relevant subjects are: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other subject from: Metal Work, Wood Work, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics, Basic Electricity, Economics, Commerce, Statistics, Further Mathematics, Computer Studies, Geography and Biology or Agricultural Science.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Opportunities exist for grandaunts in the Food and Beverages production industries, Environmental health department, Water industry, Educational institutions/Research institutes, Food/ drug administration and control agencies, Medical/diagnostic laboratories.


Screening/Aptitude Test:

Candidates are subjected to Screening Exercise/Aptitude Test by sitting for the Graf-Comas Admission and Matriculation Board Exam (GAMBE) and score above 150 which is the given cut off mark stipulated by the college as may from time to time be decided by the Management/Regulatory Authority.

Candidates must pass Medical Test and Physical Fitness before he/she can be considered for admission.



COMPUTER SCIENCE

The ND Computer Science programme is designed to produce middle-level manpower computer professionals, capable of applying the use of computer systems to various areas of Information and Communication Technology. The programme covers software development, basics of working with hardware, networks, and computer systems; web development, data analytics amongst other areas of computing.

Diplomates of this programme should be able to:

  1. Manage computer systems
  2. Use various Computer packages
  3. Maintain and manage computer hardware
  4. Create and manage web applications
  5. Use various programming languages: Python, Java, Visual BASIC, C Programming
  6. Set up and manage computer networks

Entry requirements

Five credit level passes in GCE “O” level, Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE), NECO and NABTEB at not more than two sittings. The five subjects must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and two other subjects chosen from the following: Economics, Geography, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science.

A Pass in Physics is compulsory for Computer Science.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The computer science field includes a wide array of interesting and diverse occupations — from software developers to database administrators to web developers. In addition to the more traditional opportunities within the field, another expanding area is the world of artificial intelligence.

Computer scientists can be found in many different working environments, including “academia, research, industry, government, private, and business organizations.” This variety provides significant flexibility when it comes to finding the right fit for where and how a person prefers to work.
