Fisheries Technology – Higher National Diploma

The Fisheries Technology Programme is a practical agricultural based course with a focus on equipping students with good management skills in fish processing, production and other aquacultural practices. It is a course relevant at this crucial time as the Federal Government seeks to diversify the global economy by focusing on Agriculture and allied industries.

The programme seeks to produce entrepreneurs with the necessary formal and highly technical skills necessary to establish agricultural concerns which are not usually capital intensive and can enjoy the full support of the government as it pushes it’s agricultural agenda.

What you will learn

The Curriculum covers various aspects of Aquaculture, Mariculture, Pond construction, Fisheries Management, Feed Formulation, Sustainable Livelihood and Development, Fish Post-Harvest Technology and Storage, Fish Product Development, Fish Marketing and Advertisement, Ornamental Fisheries, Environmental/Waste management, Aquaponics and Re-circulatory technology amongst others.

  • Managers and supervisors in various fish farms and fisheries companies
  • Quality control officers in fish processing outlets
  • Banking officers in Agricultural development banks
  • Extension officers in State/Federal Agricultural Development Ministries
  • Researchers in research institutes
  • Regulatory/Standards Officers in such agencies as Federal Department of Fisheries(FDF) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON)
  • Officers in Non-Governmental Organisations on Agriculture Development or Environmental/Natural resources management as well as International Organisations such as Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World fish, etc.
  • Faculty in training and tertiary institutions
  • Graduates are also trained to be entrepreneurs in the various aspects of the fisheries value chain. They can own feed milling factories or establish hatcheries and embark on fingerlings, table size or broodstock production. They may also focus on processing and post-harvest product development.

Admission Requirments

Candidates must first of all get a Diploma in Graford College or any recognized Institution (NBTE- Accredited) with at least Lower Credit in relevant courses, as well as five (5) credit passes at SSCE, GCE, NECO and NABTEB at not more than two (2) sittings in Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science, English Language and any other subject from the following: Physics, Economics, Additional mathematics and Geography. Before taking a National Diploma program.

Evidence of successful completion of Post- National Diploma Industrial Training programme with at least six (6) months or one (1) year experience.


Screening/Aptitude Test:

Candidates are subjected to Screening Exercise/Aptitude Test by sitting for the Graf-Comas Admission and Matriculation Board Exam (GAMBE) and score above 150 which is the given cut off mark stipulated by the college as may from time to time be decided by the Management/Regulatory Authority.

Candidates must pass Medical Test and Physical Fitness before he/she can be considered for admission.
